RIGHT TIME RIGHT PLACE

It has been a case of timing visits right and also being in the tenanted pools and runs. As March closed and April began members were locating more fish. Unfortunately some rods missed out being there when levels were too high and coloured.

Members have caught some very nice fresh run salmon on our Whiteadder fishing. Olly Shepherd landed a 7 lb salmon at the Horseshoe on fly losing another. Paul Whent also caught a 7 lb fresh run salmon on fly. Rolly Dickinson landed an 8lb salmon at Edington.

Harvey Marchbank landed a lovely 8lber caught on a Verminator fly. Kevin Thomas carefully released a grilse of around 5lb to a Black and Yellow tube fly.

Jonathan Sheard carefully released salmon of 7lb and 8lb losing another at the net. Neil Thomson caught an excellent 12.5lb salmon on fly. A fair number of fish were lost including at least six at the net.

Hopefully our Tyne, Coquet and Wear beats will begin producing sport as levels settle. The persistent heavy rainfall has made for difficult fishing conditions. There appears to be improvement with less heavy downpours. The first of the sea-trout should be slipping into the Wear, Tyne and maybe the Coquet. The Border Esk and Lyne may well see some early sea-trout after all the water.

After the vast amount of water through our rivers, fish may well have moved well upstream. This may provide some anglers with a surprise salmon or sea-trout. Time will tell.

On the brown trout scene fish have been in good condition from reports I have received.

I had two visits to our Otterburn Water catching three trout to around 12oz on my first visit. The second visit last week produced 10 trout including one just under 1.5lb. My successful fly was a Peter Ross fished on the top dropper on a size 12. Other successful patterns were Greenwell Spider and a Goldbead Gold Ribbed Hare’s Ear on a longshank 12. Trout were in good order.

Tight lines and enjoy your fishing!
